In 1871 books #1, 2, and 3 were listed as Ballantyne books but without
a designated series name.
This series (Volumes 1-4) was first published by Porter & Coates in
1873. By 1883 Title #4, "Floating Light" was no longer included in this
series.
These titles later were part of the Alta Series-a Large publisher's
series published; by both Porter & Coates as well as Henry T.
Coates & Co.
The early non-series formats are blindstamped with gilt
decorations and lettering on the spine. Initially these early books had
the PC initials stamped on the center of the front cover. Later the
front cover has a simple decorative embossed pattern.
