The first editions were published in 1862 by the Sunday-School Union. The title page indicates the Sunday-School Union but Carlton & Porter is shown as the copyright holder. By 1868 the title page imprint noted Carlton & Lanahan. Later these book were published by Nelson & Phillips, Phillips & Hunt, Hunt & Eaton and Eaton & Mains.
