This series was published by William G. Wardle in 1848. It is unknown whether this edition is an American first. Later the books were part of other publishers' series which had more than three titles. At this time there is no evidence that the Wardle collection had more than three books.
Preface notes that book #1 is the second volume of "Tales from the German".
