#1 was first published as "The Boys Reading-Book" and #2 was originally "The Girl's Reading Book".

Carter published these books numerous times. Books #1 and #2 were also part of the Fireside Library, Second Series in 1864. Editions have been seen in 1849, 1850, 1851, 1853, 1855, 1857, 1859, and 1860, 1864, 1868.
It is not clear at this time when the books which were part of the Fireside Library were published. 1864 is certain.
