In 1872 Appleton published a 32 volume set of Cooper's works. The
1872 volumes and all the other Appleton Cooper publications are
reprints. At that time two separate five volume boxed sets were
published: Sea Tales and Leather-Stocking Novels. The later two sets
were also sold in one volume omnibus books.
It was not until the mid 1890's that these titles were listed as
"juveniles" in the Appleton catalogues. Of note is that earlier in the
non juvenile listings the Leather-Stocking Series included seven
titles. There is no distinguishing features between the juveniles and
the other Cooper formats. They may actually have been the same except
for the box that they came in probably identified the juvenile set. I
have shown below the different Appleton Cooper formats from these eras.
Three formats were noted in the Appleton catalogues. No books with an
1890's date have been seen.
Editions noted in half calf, Darley edition (has Darley illustrations)
and cloth.
