This series was introduced by Crosby, Nichols, Lee and Co. (1860-1861). Subsequently it was reprinted by Crosby and Nichols and Crosby and Ainsworth.
#2, 4, and 5 had previously been published by C. S. Francis and Co.
Illustrated
The formats of all three publishers’ books are basically the same.
The covers are blindstamped. The Crosby, Nichols, Lee and Co. as well
as the earlier Crosby and Nichols and the Crosby and Ainsworth books
have an embossed picture on the cover. The gilt spines of all the
editions have the same illustration of a boy at the wheel (helm).
The later Crosby and Nichols edition does not have the embossed cover
picture.
