Tales for the People and Their Children
This series is somewhat complicated. It was introduced in 1841 and I
have seen editions as late as 1856.
Titles were added and deleted as the years went on. In 1849 a "second
series" was added. Many of these titles were also in Appleton's
"Common School Library". Subsequently many of the volumes were also in
Appleton's "Howitt's Popular Tales".
In the mid-1850's this series was also called "Popular tales"
In 1841 these eight titles made up this series:

Many of the volumes have the series name embossed on the front cover.
Cloth. Various colors. Gilt lettering and decoration on the spine.
I have seen a number of blindstamped formats with no series name on the
cover and different embossed peripheral patterns.
