Newspaper accounts note that volume #6 was to be the last title in
the series.
These volumes were later published by Lee & Shepard.
The illustrated title page has pictures of some "heroes" as well as
vignettes from battles.
The earliest books from 1864 and early 1865 have pictures of Grant,
Mitchell and Ericsson, the subjects of books #1-3. Also on the title
page were pictures of Andrew Hull Foote and David Dixon Porter, two
people who were not ever part of this series. By later in 1865
-beginning with the first edition of #4- there were five portraits but
Foote and Porter were replaced with Sherman and Farragut. With the
publication of #5 (Sheridan) all six subjects of the series had their
portraits on the illustrated title page.
