Henry B. Ashmead (HBA) (1834-1904) established his namesake
publishing firm in about 1856 on George Street in Philadelphia.

His brother was Duffield Ashmead who was a named partner in Ashmead
& Evans.
Ashmead & Evans began in the retail and stationary business when
they bought out the interests of Willis P. Hazard in 1863. Ashmead had
spent five years with Hazard. William B. Evans had previously managed
the retail department of T. Cowperthwait & Co.
By Dec 1866 Duffield Ashmead had succeeded Ashmead & Evans.

Although there is no record a business relationship between Henry B.
Ashmead and his brother, both of Duffield's firms published Henry B.
