T. R. Dawley, New York
T. R. Dawley was located in Chicago in the 1850's. He apparently
moved to New York in the early 1860's. Dawley was first noted as a new
establishment in 1862 as a printer at the corner of Reade and Centre
Streets.
Advertisements claimed Dawley was the "Cheapest printer in the world".
This publisher printed a number of series in wraps but most were for
adults. These included Dawley's New War Novels, The Camp and Fireside
Library, Tales of Murder and Murderers, Dawley's Ten Penny Novels,
etc. Dawley published "Old Abe's Jokes" in 1864 and some Civil War
songsters. It published three known series of twelve chapbooks each
for juveniles (children).
By 1867 Dawley had incorporated as T. R. Dawley & Co. It was the
publisher of the weekly "Pen and Pencil".
