J. C. Garrigues & Co., Philadelphia
Garrigues Brothers, Philadelphia

The firm of J. C. Garrigues (1833-1872) was located at 148 S. 4th in Philadelphia. In 1861 it purchased the Sunday School Times from the American Sunday School Union. By sometime in 1862 the company was newly styled as J. C. Garrigues & Company. Beside the book business it was quite active as a carte de visite publisher. In 1868 it relocated to 608 Arch Street.

In 1872 the senior member of the firm Joseph C. Garrigues' health had taken a turn for the worse. He had become "impaired by overwork" and was admitted to the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane. As he improved, he was allowed visits into the city. On March 4th during one of those outings he disappeared. There was a posted reward of $100 for information regarding his whereabouts. On June 25th, his body was found without arms or legs. It was thought that he had been run over by a train.

In 1875 the company was renamed Garrigues Brothers. William H. and Samuel B. Garrigues were the brothers.
