In Massachusetts in the early 1800's a number of Sunday school societies were operating. In May, 1825 the Massachusetts Sabbath School Union brought together these local outfits from the various denominations under one roof. In 1828 it established a publishing wing.
In 1832 the Union was dissolved because of differences in the
philosophies of the different denominations. Each denomination formed
its own society. The Congregationalists established the Massachusetts
Sabbath School Society at that time.
In 1833 the society began publishing the monthly Sabbath School
Visiter. In 1844 this periodical was discontinued and the society
began the publication of the weekly “Well-Spring” and the monthly
"Congregational Visiter".
The publication of small books in 1839 included the “Infant Series” which had a very large list. In 1846 the “Lives of the Chief Fathers of New England Series as well as the Sabbath School Library was started.
