Saxton & Peirce (F. S. Saxton and Charles H. Peirce) opened a
book store on Washington Street in Boston in about 1840.
By 1847 Peirce was publishing books on his namesake imprint.
The company of Peirce & Rand was publishing in 1848.
George Curtis Rand (1819-1878) began in the book business with Homer and Beals in about 1830. In 1842 he joined Andrew Reid to establish Reid & Rand. This partnership published "The Sunday School Messenger" and "The Sunday School Teacher". Rand bought out Reid in 1845 and became George C. Rand & Co. Reid went on to publish the Cambridge Chroniclein 1846. He died in 1847.
In 1852 Rand's Brother-in-Law, Abraham Avery, quit work as a bookkeeper in a shoe manufacturing firm and joined Rand to form George C. Rand & Avery. Although mainly a stereotyping and printing outfit, it also published some books on its own imprint. In 1852 it was the printer for Uncle Tom's Cabin. Rand Avery went out of business in 1888.
Two series for juveniles were published by the "Rand" firms.
