Wm. Wood & Co., New York
Samuel Wood founded his namesake firm in 1804. Samuel's sons, Samuel S. and William were admitted to the house in 1817 and Samuel Wood & Sons was established. William Wood had a special interest in medical texts.
In 1836 the sons bought out the father’s interest and established Samuel S. & William Wood. In 1861 Samuel died. William Wood operated as William Wood between 1861 and 1863. In 1863 William’s son, William H. S. Wood, became a partner and the house was renamed Wm. Wood & Co. William retired in 1868 and died in 1877.
Medical books were the mainstay of the organization but five juvenile series were published. All of the juvenile series' books seen have Wm. Wood & Co. as the imprint indicating an 1863 or later publication date. None of the series were in print as late as 1879.
