The first editions were published by Dodd and Mead in 1871 and 1872.
Reprints were published in 1873 and 1876 (The latter book was published
by Dodd, Mead & Co.). There is no difference in the format of any
year's book. The base of the title pages of the books have the
publication date. The first editions of books #1-2 list volume 4 as
being in preparation in the series book list in the front of the book.
Cloth. Various colors. Gilt lettering with a black decorative
pattern on the cover and the spine. 6.75" x 5".
