M. W. Dodd
Dodd & Mead
Dodd, Mead & Co.
John S. Taylor and William Green, Jr. formed a partnership in 1837
for the purpose of buying, selling and publishing books. Taylor was
the general partner and the firm name was John S. Taylor. By July of
1837 the partnership was dissolved.
Moses Woodruff Dodd (1813-1899) joined John S. Taylor in 1839
establishing Taylor & Dodd. This firm mainly published religious
books. Dodd and Taylor went their separate ways in 1840. John S.
Taylor continued to publish into the early 1850's. Dodd founded M. W.
Dodd. Dodd's son, Frank Howard Dodd (1844-1916) joined the house in
1859. With the retirement of Moses in 1870, Frank's cousin, Edward S.
Mead (1847-1894) joined Frank to form Dodd & Mead. In 1876 the
company was renamed Dodd, Mead & Co. with the arrival of Bleeker
Van Wagenen.

The juvenile series that were published by these firms are listed
below. Appreciate that very few of the books themselves note what
series they are part of. Most of the series originally were sold as
boxed sets. The boxes noted the series or library name. But the boxes
are virtually impossible to find.
Placing some of the titles into a particular series can be very
difficult especially when dealing with the various publisher’s series.
Many series' formats have been worked out. But unfortunately there is
still some detective work to be done.
