The first editions of #1 and 2 were published by M. W. Dodd
The first editions of volumes #3 and 4 were published by Dodd & Mead

Volumes #1-3 were sold as a boxed set in 1872. By 1872 each of the first two volumes were already in their seventh edition.

The first editions of the rest of the titles (#5-28) were published by Dodd, Mead & Co.

Formats #1-4 note the first five books as authored by Martha Farqurson

Thereafter Martha Finley was noted as the author.

Format 1. Title #1
Cloth. Brown. Blindstamped. Gilt spine lettering and decoration. 4.625" x 6.875".

Format 2. Title #2
(It is unknown if title #1 was also published in this format.)
Cloth. Brown. Gilt lettering and decoration on the spine and cover.

It is not known whether the first editions of #3, #4 and #5 were published in Format 3 or Format 4 styles

Format 3.
Volumes #1-2 (?#3-5)
Cloth. Blue seen. Gilt decoration and lettering on the spine and cover.
Most likely volumes #2-4 were also published in this format although only #1 has been seen by me.

Format 4
Titles #1-5 were published in this format.
(#1-4 by Dodd & Mead, thereafter #1-5 by Dodd, Mead & Co.)

The first edition of #5 Elsie’s Womanhood was published by Dodd, Mead & Co. It noted 1876 at the base of the title page. It was released in October, 1875. (I believe in this format although I cannot be absolutely certain it was not printed in Format #3)

Cloth. Red, green and blue seen. Gilt letter boxes on the cover and the spine with black line drawn decorative patterns.

Format 5 (#1-10) ?#11
The first editions of titles #6-10 were published in this format.
Cloth. Red and green seen. 4.75" x 7".

It is currently unknown when this format was stopped. Format 6 has been noted in ads as early as 1886.

Thus, the first editions of at least from #12 to 28 were published in format 6.
Whether title #11 was first published in format #5 or #6 is unclear.

Format 6
Cloth. Red and brown seen. 8" x 5".

Elsie Dinsmore was part of the "Phoenix (Phenix) Series" published in the late 1890's.
Cloth. 16 mo.(4.5" x 6")
This edition has not been seen.

This format was a new non series edition with a revised copyright 1893
This "Elsie Dinsmore" publication was called the "Quarter Century Edition" and cost 60 cents.
Cloth. Green, grey and orange.

Two non series editions of Elsie Dinsmore with illustrations by Howard Christy
Chandler have been noted. They are cloth and quarto sized. (Shown below)

This format has not been seen with "Elsie Dinsmore" and "Elsie's Holidays".
The latter book has an 1896 copyright.
