First editions were published by Moore, Wilstach, Keys & Co. in
1855-1856
Dodd, Mead & Co. reprinted these volumes in a number of formats
beginning in 1877. Editions published after 1900 are beyond the scope
of this bibliography.
Some later editions are shown however at the bottom the page for
completeness.
Format 1
Cloth. Red, blue and brown seen. Cover has a line drawn illustration of
a ship and an anchor. The spine has gilt lettering with a black
line drawn illustration. 6.75" x 4.75".
The earliest books in this format note 1877 under the imprint on the
title page. Pre-1880 books note 751 Broadway as the address on the
title page.
New binding in 1884:
Format 2
Cloth. Various colors. Common cover of a boy on a ship for all the
titles. 16 mo.
Later editions do not have gilt on the spine.
Format 3.
Illuminated board covers which are different for each title. 8.5" x
6.75"
(Probably published in the 1880's)
Combination title book:
Beginning in the late 1880's a volume was published that combined two
titles: "Man-Of-War" and "Merchant Vessel".
Two formats of this omnibus edition have been seen.
Cloth. Covers as shown below. 9" x 7.5" (No priority is as of yet
established.)
Later editions have a slightly different front cover without the elegant gilt.
1898-1899
One book in this series also was part of the "Jumbo Series" which was published in the 1890's
Octavo. Cloth. (Sailor Life on a Man of War).
