The 65 Cent Series / Hearth-Stone Library, Second Series was
introduced by Dodd, Mead & Co. in 1878 with the first 32 titles. In
early 1879 books #33-39 were added. The price of the books was
increased to 75 cents a volume in April, 1880 because of the "increased
cost of manufacture". At that time numbers 40-45 were added. The
library was not printed after 1882.
This company had previously published all of these titles in various

Dodd, Mead & Co. published several publisher's series. None of the
volumes identify with certainty which series they belong to. Of note is
that after collecting Jacob Abbott books for many years I have never
seen an Abbott book that belongs to a Dodd, Mead publisher series. It
is presumed that the volumes that have Hearth-Stone Library lists on
the endpapers are part of the Hearth-Stone Library. Thus the book shown
below which also has an 1879 inscription is almost certainly a
Hearth-Stone Library edition.
Cloth. Probably various colors. Black front cover and spine decoration
with gilt spine letter box.
Here are the front endpapers
