John R. Anderson first advertised this set in October, 1877. Six volumes for $9.00 and 12 volumes for $10. Later the ads noted 85 cents each or all 12 volumes in a box for $10.00
The first volume, Little Paul, was ready for sale in November, 1877. Anderson was in Hartford at that time. Smike was available by the first week in January, 1878. Anderson was at 56 Beekman in New York City at that time. The rest of the volumes were published over a short period of time - probably all in 1878.
An issue about Volume 1 is whether the first edition imprint notes Hartford or 56 Beekman. No "Little Paul" has been seen with the Hartford address but since Anderson was still in Hartford when the book was released in November, 1877, there may be a first edition with the Hartford address.
All of the volumes have been seen with 56 Beekman Street on the title page. Some later editions have no address under the imprint. The combination title editions were published after Anderson had released all the single title books.
Cloth. Various colors. Cover has the series name with a peripheral
design. Two spines have been seen. One with gilt lettering and
decorative pattern (individual titles). The other with a decorative
gilt background (two titles in one volume). 7.25" x 4.75".
(Both of these spines were seen with books published earlier by Clark
& Maynard)
