John R. Anderson & Co., New York

John R. Anderson established his namesake publishing house in 1877. Sometime in 1878 he incorporated. Numerous books published in the early 1880's do not have the incorporated name on the imprint. In some books there are Anderson ads with and without the Co. noted. The reason for the two names is unknown.

In 1882-1883 Henry S. Allen joined Anderson to establish the company of "John R. Anderson and Henry S. Allen". Allen had been in the publishing industry for a number of years. He was a partner in 1867 with the G. W. Carleton & Co. firm. In 1868 he withdrew from the house so that he could join his brother John K. Allen and establish the Allen Brothers on Greene Street in New York. In 1870 the Allen Brothers joined George A. Leavitt to form Leavitt & Allen Brothers. The latter company changed its name to the World Publishing House in 1875. It dissolved in 1878. Allen was in business for himself in 1879 at Astor Place in New York City.

The Anderson and Allen company dissolved in 1883 and Anderson sold books as the Anderson School-Book Company between 1883 and 1885. In 1885 DeWolfe, Fiske & Co. made arrangements with Anderson to buy its entire line of books. Thus, Dewolfe published number of series in the same format as the Anderson books. This included Rollo's Tour in Europe, Spectacles for Young Eyes, Florence Stories, Boyhood and Manhood Series of Illustrious Americans Arthur's Home Stories as well as other titles.
