G. P. Putnam's Sons

George Putnam was born in Brunswick, Maine in 1814. He worked in the carpet business with his uncle from about 1825-1829. Putnam began in the book trade at a stationary store doing odd jobs. Later he was an under clerk for Jonathan Leavitt. By 1833 he was working for Wiley & Long. In 1838 John Wiley and George Palmer Putnam established Wiley & Putnam.

George Putnam subsequently spent a great deal of time in England procuring material for publishing in the United States. Wiley & Putnam dissolved in 1848. The new company was known as G. P. Putnam Broadway.

The firm's name changed to Geo. (George) P. Putnam shortly thereafter. In 1852 Putnam's outfit was G. (George) P. Putnam & Co.

George Putnam died in 1872 and his sons, George H., John and Irving took over the business under the "G. P. Putnam's Sons" moniker.

Considering the length of time that Putnam published in the 19th century, it is somewhat surprising that more series for juveniles were not printed. Nonetheless Wiley & Putnam and George P. Putnam & Co. did publish series for youth. The vast majority of series were published however by G. P. Putnam's Sons.
