Brown, Taggard & Chase, Boston
Brown and Taggard
Fred'k A. Brown & Co.
Taggard and Thompson
Thompson, Bigelow & Brown
Thompson, Brown & Co.
Brown, Taggard & Chase succeeded W. J. Reynolds and Co. in the
spring of 1856. The principles of this firm were:
Frederick A. Brown: He was a clerk in the W. J. Reynolds firm. The
firm became W. J. Reynolds and Co. when Brown was made a partner in
1847.
Bartholomew W. Taggard (1820-1897). I have no information about this
person except that he was a native of Massachusetts.
Lucius A. Chase (1820-1894). Chase left Brown, Taggard & Chase in
1860. At that time he became a named partner in the
bookselling/publishing firm of Chase & Nichols and then Chase,
Nichols and Hill. Later he resided in New York and was in charge of
the Orange and Judd publishing House.
When Chase left the firm in 1860, it reorganized to become Brown and
Taggard.
Brown and Taggard dissolved their partnership upon the retirement of
Taggard in March, 1862.
In 1862 Frederick A. Brown bought the interest of Taggard in the Brown
and Taggard firm and established his namesake firm. In May, 1863 the
house of Fred'k A. Brown and Co. ceased activity.
In May, 1863 Taggard came out of retirement and along with John A.
Thompson succeeded the one year old company, Fred'k A. Brown &
Co., with the new firm of Taggard and Thompson.
John A. Thompson had previously been a clerk beginning in 1854 with W.
J. Reynolds and Co.
In 1869 Taggard retired again and Thompson formed a new partnership
with D. Jackson Bigelow and David H. Brown creating Thompson, Bigelow
& Brown.
D. Jackson Bigelow (1830-1872) was a New Hampshire native who had
previously worked in several publishing firms including W. J.
Reynolds, Brown, Bazin and Brown, Taggard and Chase.
David H. Brown (-1908) was an officer in the Union Army and joined the
Taggard and Thompson firm in their education department in 1865. (Note
that this is David H. Brown not Frederick A. Brown.
When Bigelow died in 1872 the firm was renamed Thompson, Brown and
Company. This company concentrated on school and educational texts.
So to summarize:

These publishers printed a number of juvenile series. They are noted
below. The initials of the publishers that produced the series are
noted after the series name. Fred'k A. Brown & Co. books were
published for about a year and are fairly scarce. It is most likely
that this firm reprinted every series that was done by BT and TT but
some of these books have not been seen. Thus, the "probably" below.
