Cassell Publishing Company
Cassell and Company, Limited
Cassell, Petter and Galpin was established in 1855. Thomas Galpin and Thomas Petter who were in the printing business joined with John Cassell whose publishing business had just gone bankrupt. In 1858 the company morphed into Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Company.
Petter resigned from the company in 1883 and the newly named Cassell and Co., Ltd, was formed.
Oscar M. Dunham (1844-1896) became the manager of Cassell's New York branch in 1875. In 1890 Dunham bought the American rights of Cassell and Co. Limited and renamed the new firm "Cassell Publishing Company". The two publishing houses were unrelated. Dunham's new company went out of business in 1898.
Dunham disappeared in 1893 absconding with $180,000. He eventually changed his name while working for a mining company in British Columbia. In 1896 he had an accident which necessitated a leg amputation eventually leading to sepsis and his demise.
In the spring of 1898, Cassell and Company, Limited added New York to their imprint as the Cassell Publishing Company dissolved.

Identifying which editions were American series and which were English
