Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., New York
John Cassell (1817-1865) was born in Manchester, England. In his
early years he worked as a carpentry apprentice and a tea and Coffee
merchant.
He was involved in the temperance movement and in 1846 he published
several of his own temperance tracts. After purchasing a printing
plant he also established several newspapers.
A credit call in 1854 forced him to sell the copyrights to his work and the printing firm of Petter & Galpin took over his assets and debts. In 1858 he returned to the firm as a junior partner with Petter and Galpin forming Cassell, Petter & Galpin.
George William Petter (1823-1988) was a native of Barnstaple, England.
He started a printing business with his cousin George Edward Petter and Charles Duff called Petter, Duff & Co. When Petter and Duff retired, Thomas Dixon Galpin (1828-1910), who was born in Dorchester, England, joined Petter to establish Petter & Galpin.
In January, 1860 Cassell, Petter & Galpin opened a branch office in New York City. That office was organized by Walter Low. In 1878 Robert Turner joined the company as a partner and the firm name changed to Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. In 1883 the firm converted to a limited liability company: Cassell & Company, Ltd.
