Little, Brown, and Company, Boston
In 1821 Charles C. Little (1799-1869) was hired by the firm of Carter, Hilliard & Co., a bookstore and publisher. By 1827 with deaths and retirements, the firm of Hilliard, Gray & Co. was established with Little being a partner. In 1837 Little joined James Brown (1800-1855), who had been with Hilliard & Brown, the firm which ran the Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, to become Charles C. Little & James Brown. When Augustus Flagg became a partner in 1846, the outfit changed the name to Little, Brown, & Co. Upon the senior partner deaths, Augustus Flagg ran the company as the managing partner.
In June of 1898 Little, Brown, & Company bought Robert Brothers. At that time Little, Brown reprinted numerous series for juveniles that had previously been published by Roberts Brothers. Most of the early books in these sets used the same cover format as the previous Roberts Brothers Books.
Prior to the purchase, Little, Brown was known for their law books. Very few titles for juveniles had been printed.
The Little, Brown, and Company series for juveniles are listed below. Included are series that had at least one book published as late as 1900. If the earliest book in a series was 1901, the series is not in this bibliography.
