Shepard, Clark & Brown (1857-1859)
Shepard, Clark & Company (1855-1857)
Charles A. B. Shepard (1829-1889) along with H. A. Clark and E. C.
Walker founded Shepard, Clark and Company in 1855. In 1857 E. C. Walker
left the firm and E. W. Brown joined the newly established Shepard,
Clark and Brown publishing house. In December, 1859 because of
financial liabilities, the company went out of business.
Of interest is that despite the notices of business failure in 1859,
there are books with the Shepard, Clark and Brown and Shepard, Clark
and Co. 1860 imprint. This is difficult to explain.
Charles A. B. Shepard was born in Salem, Massachusetts. Early
on he worked with the Jewett publishing firm in Salem as well as in
Boston. In 1862 several years after Shepard, Clark and Brown failed, he
formed a partnership with William Lee to establish Lee and Shepard.
There were four juvenile series published by Shepard,
Clark and Brown. It does not appear that Shepard, Clark & Co.
published any juvenile series. An advertisement in 1859 announced the
children's magazine, The Little-Pig Monthly. Shepard, Clark and Brown
appeared to be a co-publisher with Dinsmore & Co., a New York
house. I do not know any details about this magazine but it appears to
have been published between May and July of 1859.
