Thomas Y. Crowell
Thomas Y. Crowell & Co.
Thomas Y. Crowell (1836-1915) was a native of Massachusetts. In 1856
after several years as a sailor, he joined the Boston bookbindery firm
of Benjamin Bradley. Bradley died in 1862 and Crowell ran the company
for the estate for three years before becoming a partner with
Bradley’s wife in 1865. After five years, Crowell took over the Boston
business renaming it, Thomas Y. Crowell, Successor to Benjamin
Bradley.
In 1875 Crowell purchased the plates, bound books and sheet stock of
Warren & Wyman, a New York publishing firm. In 1876 the New York
firm of Thomas Y. Crowell was established. William W. Wyman was the
general manager. Crowell’s first juvenile series were reprints of the
Warren & Wyman series. Thereafter Crowell’s firm continued to
grow.
