Joshua Ballinger Lippincott (1813-1886) founded his namesake publishing firm in 1836. Initially his output was religious in nature including tracts and bibles. In 1850 bought the Grigg, Elliot & Co. firm. Henry Grambo, a partner in the latter firm, was made a partner in the newly established Lippincott, Grambo & Co. house. This house was dissolved in 1855 as per the original partnership agreement and J. B. Lippincott & Co. was formed.
Lippincott's firm carried on becoming more and more of a major player in the publishing industry. In 1885 as Joshua Lippincott became ill and sensing the end was near, he reorganized the firm into a stock company. The name changed and ownership passed to his sons Craig, Walter, and J. Bertram Craige.
