Andrew F. Graves (1825-1894) was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts. Prior to 1853 he had worked in the B. B. Mussey book publishing firm. More details about his life are unknown at this time.
Andrew F. Graves joined William Heath in 1852/1853 to form Heath & Graves. In 1857 Graves left Heath & Graves and started his namesake stationary, bookselling and publishing business at 23 Cornhill. William Heath remained in the publishing business at 79 Cornhill.
Graves & Young was established in March, 1863 with Graves and Henry A. Young as the partners. They were located at 24 Cornhill. When the partnership ended five years later in March, 1868, Graves moved down the street from 24 Cornhill to 20 Cornhill. Henry A. Young stayed at the 24 Cornhill address. Of the juvenile series published by Graves & Young, Henry A. Young & Co. published most of them subsequent to the dissolution. Andrew F. Graves published several.
Graves & Ellis was established in August, 1871. George F. Ellis had previously been with Lee and Shepard. This firm was short lived as it dissolved in May, 1872 and the Andrew F. Graves firm resumed publishing on the old imprint. Graves, Locke and Co. was established in 1877 when J. S. Locke and Andrew F. Graves formed a partnership. In 1880 Graves retired and the latter partnership was dissolved and J. S. Locke & Co was established.
Henry A. Young joined N. J. Bartlett to establish Young and Bartlett in 1874. By 1875 that partnership had dissolved and Henry A. Young & Co. continued as a firm. In 1879 because of financial setbacks, Young sold many of its juvenile series' plates to Henry A. Sumner & Co. Young continued as a publisher thereafter but not in the juvenile series realm.
